2 Ways To Deal With Mosquitoes

Same Peterson

Mosquitoes are an itchy, annoying nuisance at best. At worst, they carry diseases that can be given to animals and humans. Because of that, you want to make sure that you do everything you can to avoid having them around your house. There are several things that you can do that will help to prevent mosquitoes from getting a foothold outside your home.

Avoid Standing Water

One thing you can do is to make sure that you don't have any standing water around your house. That means getting rid of water that might collect in barbeque grills, empty tires, and other containers. If you have a pond or birdbath, you might want to check to see if you can add a bubbler to them so that the water is gently moving, which can help to discourage mosquitoes from laying their eggs there. If you can't do that with a birdbath, you might want to dump it out and refill it regularly. If you have something like a rain barrel for your gutters, you should see if you can get a lid to prevent access to the water. Get one with a flange that will seal around the downspout when it enters the barrel.

Landscaping

Another thing that you can do that will help to prevent mosquitoes from getting too comfortable around your house is to plant things that mosquitoes don't like. There are several plants that will discourage mosquitoes from visiting because the scent and the oils of the plants will repel them. You can plant things like lavender and marigolds around your yard, especially around your patio, porch, or play areas. Lavender, once you plant it, is a perennial plant, which means that it will continue to come back year after year. Marigolds are annuals, so you will have to plant them yearly. You can also plant them in pots so that you can carry around the pots to various places in your yard. For example, if you have a picnic table in the middle of your yard, you might not want to plant lavender or marigolds there because they would get in the way of the mower. However, you can plant some of the flowers in a pot, and then when you want to use the table, you can put the pots on and around the table.

if you have a mosquito problem, you can always call a pest control service and have them come out and treat your yard for you, and help to identify any problem areas. For more information about mosquito removal service, contact a local professional.
