3 Tips For Pruning Your Trees This Spring

Same Peterson

Spring is right on the horizon, which means that it is time to get ready to prune your trees. Pruning your trees is the best way to get rid of old and dead branches and to ensure that your trees and shrubs are healthy and ready for the new year.

Know When to Prune

First, it is important to know when to prune your trees. Not all the trees in your yard should be pruned at the same time. If you have trees on your property that tend to flower in the middle of summer, you should prune them in the early spring. If you have trees that bloom in the early spring, you should prune them after the flowers are gone.

If you are not sure when you should prune the trees on your property, consult with a tree trimming service. They can inspect your trees, let you know what kind they are, and let you know when the best time would be to prune them.

Know What to Prune

Second, it is just as important to know what to prune as it is to know when to prune. When it comes to pruning your trees and shrubs, you don't want to just start pruning whatever branch you don't think looks good. You want to be strategic with what you prune and leave alone. You don't want to cut off too many branches; that could shock the tree and be detrimental to its overall health.

When pruning your trees, you want to first focus on removing any already dead branch or damage. Those types of branches are a safety risk and will eventually come down, so you should remove them safely.

After that, you will want to remove any limbs that are rubbing against each other; that is not good for the long-term health of your tree. Then, you can get rid of branches where too many crowd together. The last thing you should do is remove not aesthetically pleasing branches.

Know How to Prune

When you prune your trees, you should take a certain approach. If you are pruning a really long branch, cut it in half first to reduce the branch's weight, and then cut the branch closer to the tree trunk.

When cutting branches, always cut as close to the trunk, bud, or branch. You want to avoid leaving stubs. You want to make a clean cut so that it will heal properly.

If you don't want to take on the task of pruning your trees on your own, you can hire a professional tree service to trim and prune your trees. They will know precisely what to prune when to prune it, and how to do so in a safe manner.
