Five Reasons To Trim Your Trees

Same Peterson

Tree trimming serves many purposes when it comes to the health, appearance, and safety of your landscape trees. The following are the main reasons why you need to schedule an annual tree trimming.

1. Early Shaping

Young trees are more likely to grow into a healthy, attractive form if you prune them regularly beginning the first year after planting. General shaping is all that is needed at this point. Your trimming service will trim away excess branches to create a well-balanced network of lateral branches in the proper form for the type of tree. Branch tips will also be trimmed back to encourage full growth.

2. Disease Prevention

Trimming out diseased branches can help mitigate the spread of certain types of pathogens, such as some fungal and bacterial diseases. Annual trimming can also prevent diseases in the first place. For example, thinning out the canopy of excess branches allows more air circulation, which cuts down on fungal diseases. Crossed and rubbing branches should also be removed to prevent friction wounds that could provide access to disease organisms.

3. Growth Management

A tree can quickly become overgrown if it isn't regularly pruned. For most trees, this means giving them a basic trim every year in late winter. The branches are typically pruned back by about 1/4 their length so that the shape and the size of the tree are maintained. It is much easier to keep up with annual trimming to prevent a tree from growing too large than it is to try and reduce the size of the tree later.

4. Crown Reduction

If a tree does become too large, it is sometimes possible to make it a bit smaller. As mentioned, though, this is more complicated then simply managing growth from the beginning. Crown reduction consists of removing up to 1/3 of the length of the tree branches each year over several years. Eventually, the size of the crown will be reduced with minimal damage to the tree. Trying to trim it back more quickly can result in the decline of the tree, so crown reduction will take time to yield results.

5. Safety

Safety is a big reason to trim your trees regularly. Dead branches can come crashing down with little warning, and they sometimes bring down healthy branches as they fall. Larger branches can cause injury or damage property. Annual trims ensure that any dead, dying, or hazardous wood is removed before it comes down in a dangerous manner.
